Where do we go from here?

Yet Liberal democracy is not invincible nor inevitable. It is infatuated with the idea of progress, arrogantly believing society develops along a straight line. However, the fallacies upon which it is founded are shaky and its ‘progress’ sows the seeds of its own destruction. All it takes to see is to take a look around you, as we enter yet another period of profound crisis produced by the obscene concentration of wealth and power. At this point it cannot be argued that this descent into plutocracy is not a bug but a feature of capitalism. This should come no surprise in a system which believes that untethering human selfishness is best for society. The law of the jungle, survival of the fittest, reigns supreme.

The pursuit and defense of freedom is what binds this nation together. It is truly a noble purpose. But it is time to recognize that we are digging ourselves into a hole. Freedom can only be restored by making the distribution of wealth as wide as possible and the cultivation of virtue absolute priorities in our lives. Remember what was said in the Gospel of Matthew when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment of all is: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Our lives must bear witness to others that our existence is a labor of love. By following God’s Word we grow in love that we can give to others.
