Where do we go from here?

Liberal democracy is not invincible nor inevitable. It is infatuated with the idea of progress, arrogantly believing society develops along a straight line. However, the fallacies upon which it is founded are shaky and its ‘progress’ sows the seeds of its own destruction. The cracks are showing throughout the Western world. However, neither those on the left, hyper-individualism, or the right, reactive collectivism, can hope to offer the citizens of its democracies any real solution. We must imagine a future that is free from the constraints of that limited two-dimensional political spectrum.

Liberalism sounds good in theory, who doesn’t want a political system which claims to make freedom its ultimate good? However, liberalism is like a math problem poorly reasoned, its formula does not in fact equate to the solution. If we truly wish for freedom we must make restoration of the commons and the growth of virtue absolute priorities in our lives. Remember what was said in the Gospel of Matthew when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment of all is: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Our lives must bear witness to others that our existence is a labor of love. By following God’s Word we grow in love that we can give to others.
