The First Step

For those of us Americans with roots in traditions rich with Catholic spirituality we must remind ourselves that we are called by Christ not to be driven by selfish desires but compassion for the poor and marginalized. Our economic affairs should be organized in a way that assures wealth is held equitably and makes use of our resources judiciously rather than having the fruits of our labor concentrate in only a few greedy hands by means of wasteful consumerism. The importance of virtue needs to be reaffirmed, centered by the search for what is good, the truth and the beautiful, all things that bring us closer to God and the means by which we can bring the inherent potential of every person to come to fruition and to safeguard against abuses to human dignity. To assimilate fully is a fool’s errand, a spiritual dead end. Instead of passively watching or even participating as this mighty country throws its weight around for the sake of corporate plunder we must instead act as a counterweight to bring its excesses in check. Our allegiance should not be to a nation, but to Christ’s Kingdom. We cannot be afraid to say what is unpopular if it is the Gospel Truth. It is our duty as the sons and daughters of God. Should you feel called to, you will find within this site reflections which seek to identify the rot that has crept into all aspects of society and threatens to choke our roots as well as the means by which we can collectively begin to purge it from our midst.
